Establishment of Church

The believers of Tadong Church attended the church service at Gangtok on Sundays and all other related fellowships till 1983. For the care and guidance of the congregation of Tadong, Mr A. Dhungel was appointed as the first lay leader/ Elder of Tadong in 6th September 1981. With passage of time the congregation multiplied, sensing the need for an additional spiritual guide, Mr D.T. Sada was appointed as the second Elder.

As the years rolled by the size of the congregation gradually became larger. The only church at Gangtok was quite far off, so it was difficult walking all the way uphill to Gangtok, especially in times of sickness and inclement weather conditions. To add to the woes, there were limited transportation facilities. So the only option was to trudge uphill to the church. For these reasons members of Tadong placed a proposal to Gangtok Pastorate for opening of a branch church at Tadong. After a lot of discourse, it was agreed upon that a branch of Gangtok Church be established at Tadong. Temporarily the fellowship was conducted in the house of Mr G. T. Tasho. It was here that Late Aiela Mingma Bhutia accepted the Lord.

Thereafter, the fellowship continued in the house of Mr Leda Bhutia from 14.9.1986, heralding the first Sunday Service. The members gathered in the house of Mr Leda Bhutia till 23.4.1988.

EXPANSION OF CONGREGATION

With the gradual rise in the number of believers, the house of Mr Leda Bhutia proved to be rather small to accommodate the ever increasing number of believers. Therefore, feeling the need to accommodate more number of believers, it was decided to look for an appropriate place to construct a church building. Finally, a piece of land measuring 20'-0"x 25'-0", which belonged to Mr A. D. Rai, was purchased with a funding of Rs. 25,000/-received from the Pastorate. Later due to unavoidable circumstances the land was again reverted to Mr A. D. Rai. Finally, under the charge of Late A. Dhungel, Mrs N. O. Tasho and Mrs Tabita Pradhan, a piece of land which belonged to Mr Gyurmee Goparma was bought in 1987 at a cost of Rs. 70,000/-. Mr Gyurmee Goparma was kind enough to exempt Rs. 5000/ - stating that the land was being given for the construction of the Lord's house. While buying the said land, Rs. 1000/- was collected from every believer's house which accumulated to Rs. 17,000/- Subsequently, some additional collections were contributed by well-wishers of the church. The remaining amount was covered by the Pastorate itself. In the process of searching and registering the church land, Late A. Dhungel, Mrs N.O. Tasho, Mrs Tabita Pradhan, in the process some of the members had to go through extreme humiliation in the hands of the authorities then.

A tent was erected at the said land and the fellowship was moved from the house of Mr Leda Bhutia to the very temporary church structure at the present location on 23.4.1988. The church service was conducted in the tent for about a year.

Later, the tent was dismantled and Ekra type church structure with GCI roofing was constructed in a record time of three days. The main person behind the construction was Mr B. M. Tamang. Thereafter the Sunday fellowship and other related services were regularly carried out in the said structure. The first service in the Ekra structure was conducted under the chairmanship of Late Elder A. Dhungel who also shared the word of God on the occasion.

Later the Ekra structure was also dismantled and the foundation stone for the new RC structure was laid on 22nd March 1993. After constructing the first floor of the church, the inaugural ceremony and dedication service was conducted by Late H. C. Simick on 3.04.1994.

During the construction of the RCC structure, Gangtok Church had donated 25 CFT of timber and 14 quintal of M. S. rods and the same was brought to the church by Mr Sonam Wangdi Targain, Mr D. D. Dhungel and Mr A. D. Rai. The backbone for the construction of the said RC structure was Mr Sonam Wangdi Targain who took all the pains to organize,

execute and expedite the construction works of the Church. The unity and the vibrancy of the church could be judged at the time when old and young, male and female, all combined and contributed physically in digging, transporting, cooking to finally create the present church structure. The Church hall located on the second floor was built with the contribution received from the local congregation and the Sikkim State Government. The structure was dedicated to Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Pawan Chamling the Lord for His glory and service on 3rd January 2003. On this eventful occasion, the Honourable Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Pawan Chamling graced the dedication service as the Chief Guest.

This was later renovated and brought to the present state and utilized for His service from 1st November, 2014. As it is obvious that after the formation of a congregation, keeping it stable by feeding the spiritual food, guidance and constant follow up backed by fellowship is a must. A fire will not continue to burn effectively unless it is stoked. Similarly, a believer's fervour, if left untended, can diminish. During such occasions when the congregation was in turmoil and on the verge of collapse, one strong preacher and teacher was sent by the Lord in the form of Late Titus Pradhan who was very passionate and enthusiastic to keep the torch of faith glowing even in the midst of darkness and gloom.Besides, Late Rev Subodh Sahu also provided the fellowship and guidance frequently.

Late Heshron Subba, Mr T. O. Panlook, Mr Tsetan Targain and others helped in presenting Choir thus making the Church lively and harmonious. As of now Mr. Alexius Dhungel has been contributing to the cause of Church Choir.
